Success for ASDA (Wal-Mart), BT, E.ON and Interactive Driving Systems at 2013 Brake Awards
21st June 2013

June 2013 saw the presentation of the annual Brake road safety achievement awards, which aim to recognise and share good practice and inspire further work towards road safety. In total 100+ entries were received showcasing some outstanding work. Awards were presented to ASDA, BT, E.ON and Interactive Driving Systems by Arval's internationally recognised and inspirational corporate social responsibility leader Tracey Scarr.

ASDA GROCERY HOME SHOPPING AND INTERACTIVE DRIVING SYSTEMS WIN FLEET SAFETY PARTNERSHIP AWARD
This category recognises partnerships that have delivered the most outstanding results to improve fleet safety. The judges summarised the project as:

  • A comprehensive risk management programme being introduced, including risk assessments, on-going data analysis, targeted driver training and safe driving communications.
  • Working with other stakeholders such as the driver training provider, claims handler and incident management provider, to successfully roll out the programme.
  • Developing resources for managers to support leadership in compliance and good practice.
  • A reduction in incidents from 93 per million miles in 2008 to 54 per million miles in 2012.

BT RECEIVE FLEET SAFETY ANALYSIS AND ACTION AWARD
This award recognises procedures for carrying out risk assessments, data analysis and introducing tailored interventions. BT was chosen for its well thought-out and comprehensive approach, founded on rigorous data collection and analysis including:

  • A huge programme of online risk assessments, training and coaching feeding into a risk data warehouse; from which information is used to target specific training to those who need it.
  • Policies and processes are under constant review, and two Masters dissertations by employees and PhD research have been based on the programme, further helping to shape, evaluate, sustain and share it.
  • Halving its collision rate and cost across a huge fleet of more than 34,000 vehicles by continuing to improve the programme over a 10 year period, reducing claims from 59 to 27 per 1,000 vehicles and annual costs by over £14 million.

ASDA GROCERY HOME SHOPPING WIN 'LARGE FLEET CATEGORY' OF COMPANY DRIVER SAFETY AWARD
The judges recognised the company for:

  • Taking its fleet management from fragmented interventions with drivers and recording of data to a cohesive programme rolled out across the division.
  • Introducing online risk assessments, a safe driving pledge, online driver training and a store driver assessment system.
  • Establishing a corrective action programme to ensure appropriate actions are taken with drivers following incidents.
  • Implementing a 'grab pack' to better manage claims reporting, recording and investigating.
  • Halving its incident rate from 6 to 3 per million pounds of sales revenue.

E.ON, BT, ASDA AND IRON MOUNTAIN ALL 'HIGHLY COMMENDED'
In the Company Driver Safety Award E.ON was commended for implementing a variety of measures with drivers and its grey fleet. BT was recognised for its comprehensive programme which extends to family and friends and has resulted in a reduction in annual claims from 59 to 27 per 1,000 vehicles. Lindsay Randall from ASDA Grocery Home Shopping impressed the judges in the Newcomer Road Risk Manager of the Year Award with her diligent, data-led approach and attention to detail in implementing fleet safety practices across 200 locations. In the Road Risk Manager of the Year category Iron Mountain's Rory Morgan was acknowledged for his passion for road safety in implementing a range of initiatives resulting in a 70% reduction in incidents over five years. BT's Dave Wallington was praised for his long term sustained commitment to road safety, developing BT's fleet safety initiatives and sharing good practice globally.

Andy Cuerden, IDS's Managing Director, said: "It is exciting to see a number of our clients receive public recognition for the incredible work they are doing to protect their employees, their families and the communities in which they live and work. Risk management of drivers is a very complex process requiring a long term undertaking to achieve the kind of results recognized at the Brake Awards tonight - but congratulations are also due to all the entrants for their hard work and commitment to assessing, managing and supporting their drivers".
