Interactive Driving Systems is an award winning research-led provider of global fleet risk management solutions operating from main offices in Europe and North America.
Our origins were in the quality movement of the early 1990s, helping over 200 corporations on their journey to successful ISO9000 registration and onwards to creating a Total Quality Environment / Culture. Two of our most successful clients during this period, both amongst the largest Logistics Service Providers in Europe, BOC Distribution Services (Division of BOC Gases - now Linde) and Exel Logistics (Now part of DHL) invited us to look at some of the cultural issues surrounding the safety management of their professional drivers. The work led to the creation of the world's first defensive driving CD-ROM: Interactive Defensive Driving, endorsed by BOC Distribution Services with the principal aim of reinforcing on-road driver training programs.

Its successful release and implementation in the UK in 1996, led us directly into safe driving projects with the British Armed Forces (UK Land Command), Zurich Risk Engineering and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

This work identified the potential of merging everything we had learned and were teaching in Quality Management and Continuous Improvement with the issues facing corporations in the management of road safety. The lessons are very similar - long term sustainable success requires leadership and a structured approach. One off 'reactive' interventions in either scenario - quality management or fleet risk management - bear little in terms of sustainable success.
Our commitment to road safety was further influenced by working with the UK Government in 1997 on the introduction of a CD-ROM to help learner drivers succeed with the new UK Government Driving Theory Test. We were awarded a license by the Driving Standards Agency and the resultant product was launched in London with the then Minister of Transport.

This led to a joint venture with the Institute of Advanced Motorists for an Advanced Driver Training CD-ROM for the Corporate Market. An intensive research program with universities in the UK and overseas refined our strategies to help organizations in managing their occupational road risk strategy. The result, which now stretches across the globe, is known as 'Virtual Risk Manager'.

During this time, we were instrumental in working with the UK Government to refine their work-related road safety strategies for industry serving on two advisory committees.

Based on our initial product development work, Virtual Risk Manager has evolved from a pure CD delivery platform to be available online across all continents of the world in more than 45 languages. We have maintained our in-house CD-ROM development skills and often produce custom products for corporations where internet access is not available or in the early stages of development. Paper based workbooks have also been successfully implemented by many high profile organizations in the UK, Europe, Africa, Australia and USA - all of whom have used Virtual Risk Manager for a number of purposes and publicly credited it with helping to reduce their crash rate, cut costs, win external recognition and achieve legal compliance.

Our arrival in the Americas in 1999 was as a direct result of partnering with Zurich Risk Engineering, who invited us to setup an office in the USA to support their growing presence in the global motor insurance marketplace. We are celebrating over 15 years of involvement with Zurich Risk Engineering, and 14 years in America, helping to support their customers across the world. Our first US product, Interactive Defensive Driving USA, was launched in association with Zurich and the National Safety Council and sold over 20,000 copies before being withdrawn in 2002 with the launch of Virtual Risk Manager online in the USA. It is rumoured to have been copied over 100,000 times and we still get help line calls to this day!

Our current approach, based on over 20 years of successful research and practice, is to provide clients with the tools to turn their management of road safety into a 'pro-active' strategy and data-led discipline, as opposed to reacting after an event has taken place. Our dedicated team of consultants and software engineers continue to work tirelessly to systematically improve our products and services in the light of research, experience and global good practice.
