Outokumpu Sheffield employees pledge to drive carefully at safety week workshop
6th December 2006
Sheffield-based steel supplier, Outokumpu, has recently taken a proactive approach to road safety by organising a series of discussion workshops with staff to identify the risk levels they face on the road and brainstorm ways to improve road safety.

In total over 150 managers and staff attended the workshops, which were set up by with support from leasing company Lloyds TSB Autolease and facilitated by Dr Will Murray - head of research at Interactive Driving Systems®.

The workshops covered several key areas:

- Why is safe driving important?
- What makes a safe / unsafe driver?
- What are the barriers to safe driving?
- How can the barriers be overcome?
- Safe driving pledge for drivers and managers.
- Resources and next steps.

Sue Carr, who organised the sessions said: 'The workshops were a real eye-opener for us. As a business we are very proactive about our site safety - and we are now keen to extend this out off-site and onto the road. This workshop which was undertaken as a key element of our safety week program has allowed us to start this process'.

In total participants pledged to take over 10 different actions in their future driving, these included slowing down, checking and servicing their vehicles more diligently and allowing more time for journeys.

Although the company has many good systems in place, participants identified a range of steps they would like their managers to consider implementing, including the following:

- Improved quality, signage, cleanliness and enforcement of rules on on-site road.
- Allowing people enough time to complete journeys.
- Providing appropriate risk assessment and training for staff.
- Providing further sessions and development opportunities on road safety.
- Undertake more vehicle checks.

All participants received a copy of the Interactive Highway Code (see www.highwaycode.net) as part of the workshop, which they were asked use for themselves and any of their family members who drive or are learning to drive.

The workshop was also an opportunity for managers to review the Fleet Sense program, and the free online Fleet Health Check that supports it (Click here)
