Iron Mountain Cuts Collisions And Costs
Iron Mountain helps organisations around the world reduce the risks and costs associated with storing, protecting and managing company information.

Iron Mountain's fleet of 430 vans, large goods and specialist vehicles in the UK and Ireland.
At the end of 2008 the company formulated a business case for a comprehensive programme of driver assessment and training. Its key objectives were to:

• Reduce the risk of harm to employees and others.
• Reduce the number of incidents.
• Reduce costs.
• Fulfil their legal duty under Health & Safety legislation.
• Meet planned corporate social responsibility objectives.

Iron Mountain engaged Zurich Risk Engineering to review and compare its work-related road risk management against industry best practices. The review covered elements including fleet safety policy, leadership and culture, driver training and wellbeing.

This process led Iron Mountain on a comprehensive online risk assessment programme for all its commercial vehicle drivers using Virtual Risk Manager. This checked drivers' awareness of the Iron Mountain driver policies in their handbook; undertook an online driver risk assessment programme covering all areas of road safety; and driver coaching using a team of five in-house driver trainers.

All Iron Mountain commercial vehicle drivers are graded based on a number of factors, including their collision and violation histories, parking infringements and compliance with internal and customer Health & Safety procedures.

Iron Mountain also introduced a telemetry system across the fleet, adopting Greenroad via Zurich Fleet Intelligence (ZFI) - which significantly reduced safety related events, risky manoeuvres, collisions, fuel use and more recently idling.

Overall, this risk management strategy has resulted in an on-going downward trend in incident and claim rates. Iron Mountain reduced the number of incidents reported by 71% in two years from 2008 to 2010. Alongside the reduction in incidents, Iron Mountainís cost of claims reduced by 43% in two years.

More recently, speaking at the Brake Best of Best conference in February 2012, Tracey Kinloch, European risk manager at Iron Mountain, said: 'Our incident rate has reduced by 65% over three years, our insures gave us a 14% rate reduction and our road damage, which is self-insured, reduced by 60% off the bottom line'. Rory Morgan, national logistics general manager for Iron Mountain Europe, concluded: 'In three years a significant amount of money has been saved'.

Iron Mountain has also received recognition for its innovative safety programme from Brake's Fleet Safety Forum Awards for Excellence, the GreenFleet magazine and the Fleet News awards.
