| WHY ORGANISATIONS NEED TO MANAGE FLEET RISK |
Driving is a high-risk activity. Approximately a third of all deaths on the road involve a vehicle being used for work purposes.
Reducing the number of work-related driving incidents is seen as a major issue by ACC, health and safety and transportation agencies.
Employers are not just obliged to meet transportation compliance requirements they must also comply with health and safety legislation that applies to vehicles which are now recognised as part of the work place.
Undertaking work-related road risk assessments and implementing the appropriate interventions to reduce the risks faced by individual drivers demonstrates a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of your employees, as well as compliance with global best practice.
An effective fleet risk management strategy also reduces costs and demonstrates your corporate social responsibility. |

| WHAT IS VIRTUAL RISK MANAGER® NEW ZEALAND? |
Virtual Risk Manager® New Zealand has been developed to help employers understand and manage their work-related road risks.
The program is delivered through the four elements detailed below:
• Policy, Pledge, Risk Foundation™ and Driver code of conduct.
• RoadRISK™ Profile and Defensive Driving assessment and driver feedback.
• One More Second® and RoadSKILLS™ driver development modules.
• Secure, password protected, MIS to monitor and manage performance. |
| Phase 1: Policy, Pledge and Risk Foundation™. |
Policy |
A sample safe driving policy to be adopted and used by the organisation and provided to each driver, to support the Your Safe Driving Policy booklet provided by ACC and NZTA government for all fleets operating in New Zealand. |
Pledge
(ACC generic or custom) |
All participating drivers will be required to sign a Safe Driving Pledge online, to affirm their commitment to do their best for themselves, their family and their employer. It is a formal acknowledgement from the organisation to 'look after' the road safety of its employees and by each driver to agree to comply with the Road Code, transport legislation, health and safety and company procedures. |
Risk Foundation™
(ACC Generic or custom) |
An online multiple choice assessment based on the most important factors covered in the Road Code, as well as fleet and health and safety requirements. The organization can demonstrate that they have communicated the key policy issues designed to keep their drives safe at all times. Drivers must pass at 100% to ensure 'mastery' of the subjects covered. |
| Phase 2: RoadRISK™ Profile and Defensive Driving assessment and driver feedback. |
RoadRISK™ Profile Assessment |
An online fact based risk assessment module which establishes fundamental characteristics of the driver, the journeys they make and the vehicles they drive for work purposes. This (independently validated) risk assessment provides the organisation with an in-depth risk profile of all of their employees who drive for work purposes. This allows targeted interventions for each individual employee, based on their own detailed risk profile. |
 |
RoadRISK™ Defensive Driving Assessment |
This predictive risk assessment measures each driver's attitude towards defensive driving, knowledge of defensive driving techniques and behavioural response to hazardous situations. This proven competency-based risk assessment gives organizations valuable insight into the risks employees face based on their core driving competencies. It supplements the basic risk information from the Driver Profile, and allows the appropriate interventions to be selected.
Employees also have access to personalized feedback to learn the best practice associated with each of the issues. In this way RoadRISK™ also acts as an interactive learning tool. |
| Phase 3 - One More Second® and RoadSKILLS™ driver development modules. |
Training |
Where training is identified as an appropriate intervention, this is based on modular courses to ensure that an individual employee's individual risk profile is targeted. Two such online modules are available in the Virtual Risk Manager® New Zealand program. |
One More Second®
(ACC generic or custom) |
This online workbook can help your drivers develop the attitude and behaviours necessary to safely manage today's demanding driving situations. Helps drivers understand that their 'attitude' is the key to their long term safety. 30 Question knowledge checks help to cement the information in the drivers mind. |
RoadSKILLS™ |
Internet-based training on defensive driving to further reduce risks. Provides an opportunity for the driver to practice their defensive driving strategies from the 'relative' safety of their computer. |
| Phase 4 - Secure, password protected, management information system (MIS) to monitor and manage performance. |
Management Information System |
Stores all the information collected from the above process. The MIS allows managers to monitor the completion of each module, ensuring that all employees carry out their required assessment and development modules. It facilitates targeting of any further interventions such as driver workshops, driver-manager OneToOnes or relevant behind the wheel programs. |
